FrequentlyAsked Questions
We’ve answered some of the most common questions about automatic gearbox diagnostics, repairs and rebuilds. If you can’t see your question below, please call or message us — we’re happy to advise.
Which automatic gearboxes do you work on?
We work on most major automatic transmission types across a wide range of makes and models, including ZF, DSG/DCT, CVT and traditional torque-converter automatics. If you’re unsure what gearbox you have, contact us with your registration and we’ll advise.
What are the common signs of an automatic gearbox problem?
Typical symptoms include warning lights, harsh or delayed gear changes, slipping, juddering, loss of drive, unusual noises, and fluid leaks. If the car doesn’t feel right, it’s best to have it checked early to prevent further damage.
Do you need to see the car to diagnose the fault?
In most cases, yes. Many gearbox issues can present similar symptoms, so proper diagnosis usually requires a scan, checks, and where appropriate a road test. However, we can often give initial guidance over the phone based on your symptoms.
Can my gearbox be repaired, or will it need replacing?
It depends on the fault. Some problems can be resolved with targeted repairs, while others may require a rebuild or replacement. After diagnosis, we’ll explain the findings clearly and give you the options so you can choose the best route forward.
What’s the difference between a gearbox rebuild/reconditioning and a replacement?
A rebuild (reconditioning) involves stripping and rebuilding the gearbox (as required) using quality components. A replacement means fitting another gearbox unit (often reconditioned). We’ll recommend the most sensible option based on the condition of your gearbox and the fault found.
How long does gearbox repair or reconditioning take?
Timescales vary depending on the vehicle, gearbox type, and the fault. Once we’ve diagnosed the issue, we’ll provide a clear timeframe and keep you updated throughout the job.
How much does an automatic gearbox repair cost?
Costs can vary widely depending on the gearbox type and the fault. We don’t quote guesswork — we prefer to diagnose the problem first, then provide a clear, itemised quote and options where available.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Reconditioned transmissions come with a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty. Warranty on repairs depends on the fault and work carried out — we’ll explain this clearly at the time of quoting.
Can I still drive if my gearbox is faulty?
Sometimes, but it may not be advisable. Continuing to drive with symptoms such as slipping, warning lights, or harsh shifting can cause further damage. If you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll advise the safest next step.
Do you service automatic gearboxes and change gearbox fluid?
Yes — servicing and fluid changes can be an important part of gearbox maintenance. Whether it’s suitable depends on the manufacturer guidance and the gearbox type. We can advise based on your vehicle and mileage.
Do you only work with certain brands?
No — we work across all makes and models, including many premium and performance vehicles. If your brand isn’t listed on the website, it doesn’t mean we can’t help — please get in touch.
I’ve been told I need a new gearbox — should I get a second opinion?
In many cases, yes. Some gearbox problems are caused by electrical faults, sensors, software issues, or related drivetrain components, and may not require full replacement. A proper diagnosis can often save time and money.
